English Language

Wondering about English Language?

Curious about how children learn to read and write? Intrigued by how MSN and texting affects language use? Interested in speech as well as writing?

If so, this could be the course for you!

The study of language at AS and A2 levels will enable you to gain experience and ability in thinking about and showing how language works in various situations and in different ways. Like English Literature it is a well respected subject which combines well with other AS courses and it is widely accepted by universities. It is a popular and successful course at St Bede’s.

However, AS and A2 English Language is not a mere extension of GCSE English; you need to be aware that  the course will be as demanding and as new to you as any other subject you have not previously studied.

The GCE Advanced course consists of four modules; two for AS and a further two for A2. In your first year you will study child language acquisition, spoken, written and electronic language and how language presents and sometimes stereotypes individuals and groups. In addition you will develop your analytical and writing skills.

A good deal of independent work is required as you would be learning how to analyse and produce a wide range of written and spoken texts

You would have six double lessons per fortnight with two English specialists. You will be encouraged to develop your ideas in group and class activities and to become confident and skillful at presenting, discussing and defending them. In addition to essays and data response questions you would be expected to undertake research and produce original writing for particular purposes and audiences.

You will find that your teachers’ interest in you is not confined to the classroom and that they will be happy to discuss your work at pretty well any practical time. Miss Cochran, who is in charge of this course, would be happy to answer your queries.

So rather than just wondering about English Language, why not come and join us?

The most important thing to remember is that English is fun!
