Michael Barber was appointed Headmaster of St Bede’s College from 1st September 2008.
He was born in Manchester and his first school was St Ambrose, in Chorlton. He moved to Yorkshire at the age of six. Educated at St Michael’s College, Leeds, he then went to St Peter’s College, Oxford University to study Mathematics, where he specialised in Fluid Dynamics, Mechanics and Complex Variables. His first job, was as a systems analyst and programmer for ICL in Kidsgrove. After two years, he left to study for a PGCE at Manchester University. He worked at Cheadle Hulme School and Birkenhead School and obtained a M.Sc. from Manchester University in Aeronautical Engineering (actually it was more Maths!).
In 1989, he was appointed by Mr Byrne as Head of Mathematics at St Bede’s College, where he stayed for six and a half years, before taking up an apointment as Deputy Head at St Benedict’s School in Ealing. He then moved to Downside, again as Deputy Head, before returning to St Bede’s.
He is married to Sally and has three children.
He enjoys most sports, but in particlar, football, hockey, rugby and (more recently) netball. He tries to exercise every day and enjoys listening to many forms of music. He has sung in choirs every since he can remember.
