The tournament was split into two groups and the top four then competed in the semi-final. The winners then qualified for the National Tournament. The team finished as winners of their section with notable victories against Wilmslow High School, Sedburgh, Range High School and Blackpool Sixth Form College. The semi-final against the hosts, Wirral Grammar School, was a one sided affair with the girls winning 10-0. The National finals take place on March 17th in Basildon Essex. This is a tremendous achievement and we wish them further success.

He founded the Old Bedians Sports Centre in Didsbury in 1954 and continued to run it for 58 years. As a young player he set a try-scoring record for Sale as a rugby star, 68 tries scored in a season, and continued to play rugby until he was 93. Michael came on as substitute in a Carling Cup fourth round fixture away at Aldershot on Tuesday 25th October 2011. William had to wait a little longer for his debut but he came on as substitute against Blackburn in the Premier League defeat at Old Trafford on New Year’s Eve.
Mike has since gone on loan for the season to Royal Antwerp in Belgium to continue his development and William has stayed in Manchester to battle for his place in the First team as Manchester United continue their quest to hold onto the Premier League title. Both players played for the College throughout their schooling, with great distinction, helping their teams lift a number of trophies and we wish them continued success in their chosen profession.

An impressive total of 46 students from the U5th, L6th and U6th took part in this year’s Senior Maths Challenge, organised by the UK Mathematics Trust.
Theo Sharrock, Samuel Walsh, Mike Chen and Isabella Zhang all achieved the prestigious gold award, with Theo, Samuel and Mike qualifying for the British Maths Olympiad! I cannot remember the last time St Bede’s had three qualifiers going through to the next stage.
This is an outstanding achievement for all three as only the top few hundred candidates across the country qualify for the Olympiad stage. Isabella qualified for the ‘Senior Kangaroo’ which is the equivalent of the UEFA Cup (compared to the Champions League)!
Silver certificates went to Youngtaek Yu, Billy Fraine, Spencer Jiang, Hannah Hayes, Killy Zhao, Kofo Spaine, Rob Benson-May, Luke Webb and William Simpson.
Bronze certificates went to Anton Breen, Ben Totterdell, Alex Mannion, Sam Poikkimaki, Rob Gleave, Katherine Gillibrand, Jess McNamee, Michael James, Yolanda Yang, Yali Jiang and Lucy Charleson.
I was very pleased with the number of students who entered the Challenge and I am delighted with the success that they achieved, most notably the four who qualified for the follow on stages. All four are very talented mathematicians with bright futures ahead of them!

Rising Manchester group The Rainband have added a new date to their December tour calendar – to drop in on aspiring musicians at the annual Battle of the Bands at St Bede’s Not only did the band make the College event a more star studded affair this year they have also offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to one of our lucky teenage bands – to open their December 18th headline gig at the newly refurbished HMV Ritz in Manchester.
St Bede’s pupils may well also feel that it is a fairy tale opportunity to be added to the bill of one of The Rainband’s exciting December tour dates which also include gigs with Ocean Colour Scene across the country. The pupils can expect to brush shoulders with Manchester legends from bands such as Elbow, James and the Happy Mondays at the Ritz event, and may well be dreaming of Liam Gallagher one day describing them as he has The Rainband, as “on the cusp of something major…”
The lucky Bedian winners, singer song writers Christian Harrison, Helena Ward and Amy Hatch have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to support The Rainband at the new HMV Ritz on Sunday 18th December. Their bands, The Licks and The Kids are Alright were also given a surprise opportunity to open for The Rainband at Eden Square in Urmston on 17th December. X-factor has nothing on these aspiring musicians!
Proceeds from the Battle of the Bands will go towards the various charities supported by St Bede’s College during Advent. The Rainband have also promised to give a generous donation to the College Lourdes fund. Last year the College raised over £10,000 for charities such as Francis House, Cornerstone and CAFOD, and helping those less fortunate than ourselves is integral to St Bede’s as a Christian community.

Society on the role of the navy in the modern world. Before speaking to students he was given a tour of the College as he was keen to see how things had changed since he left the College in 1992. After visiting the Chapel and the Lady Corridor to find himself and his classmates on the photographs, he was particularly keen to go backstage in the Academic Hall. Paul had been a member of the stage crew under Mrs Anne Phillips and was delighted to find that, although there had been some changes to accommodate the needs of health and safety, much remained as he remembered it. After lunch in the dining room with some of his former teachers, he gave his talk to the students who were very interested in what he had to say about the work of the navy around the world, not just protecting the coastal waters of the UK, but also helping in the fight against drugs and piracy as well as coming to the aid of those in war zones or victims of natural disasters. Paul joined the navy on leaving St. Bede’s and after university, became a submariner. After a few years he decided to pursue his career in surface ships. A few days before visiting the College, Paul had just given up command of HMS Penzance. After a few weeks leave at home in Plymouth with his wife, Susie (another Old Bedian) and two children, he is due to take up his next command, HMS Ramsay, a minehunter in the Arabian Sea. We wish him well.

St Bede’s marked the 11th of November with a Remembrance Service in the school Chapel. The event is a voluntary one, but as ever a very large number of pupils attended and the Chapel was packed. As has become traditional, the service began with an introduction intended to help us remember the many who gave their lives by focussing on a few individuals. Mr Griffin spoke about four local priests who died in the war, including three who died as a result of the great Christmas Blitz of 1940, one of whom, Fr. Charles Dunleavy, was an old boy of the college. After the silence and the last post, played with great confidence by Joe Stiles, Upper Fourth pupils who are currently studying the Great War led the prayers and laid the wreath in the Remembrance Chapel. Many pupils visited the Remembrance Chapel after the service, and were fascinated to hear from Fr. Dearman that he remembered the Christmas Blitz when, as a very young evacuee, he had been brought back into the city for the holiday. Please keep the many old boys who have died in the conflicts since 1914 in your prayers.
