From there, they will cycle over 500 miles to Lourdes, where they will deliver petitions from the St Bede’s College community. They hope to raise a considerable sum of money through sponsorship to contribute to the Lourdes Pilgrimage Fund. This will then be used to offset the cost of the pilgrimage to our students.

Alumni and staff both past and present, are looking forward to a reunion at the College on 25th May, the feast of St Bede, for those who left the Upper Sixth in 1999, 2000 and 2001. The reunion will take the format of informal drinks on the Rector’s lawn and in the Our Lady and Academic corridors where alumni will be able to take a trip down memory lane with each other and their former teachers. With over 50 guests already confirmed, the reunion looks set to be a great success and will form part of a series of similar events aimed at welcoming former pupils and colleagues back to the College. If you are part of the alumni of St Bede’s College, click on the alumni tab to register for our new online community.

This requires much logic and careful thought process to work out the pattern in each language and has been very enjoyable to be a part of, though slightly mind-boggling at times!
Our group has had many helping hands from other sources such as Mr McCotter, the ever-present Fr Dearman and, most notably, Ms Cochran, without whose time and effort in running the sessions every week, the club would never have taken off as it has.
Many students performed well in the exam we eventually took, winning bronze, silver and gold certificates, which is a great achievement. But special congratulations go to Anna Grace who, by finishing in the top 17 in the country, has qualified for Round 2, taking place at York University, where she will be coached by the country’s top experts in this subject and meet other top linguists like herself and even have a chance to earn a place on the National team.
Good luck to her and hope this club continues to fly next year!

Three fixtures were played in balmy Dublin conditions on Saturday 10th March. The Under fourteens opened up the proceedings with a flourish, a ninth minute try from James Davies, giving the fourteens an early advantage. This was quickly followed by another from Eamon Faulkner. Mr Gallagher and Mr Rafferty began to hope in expectation rather than trepidation. Alas it was not to be as an extremely strong Blackrock side ran out worthy winners.
The Second Eleven football fixture was played on the synonymous ‘Hill of Rock’ the sloping football pitch at Blackrock. A furious start led to an early chance for Rory O’Malley but his header went agonisingly wide. Nip and tuck followed with chances created at both ends until Blackrock secured the lead with a fierce drive from the edge of the box. Bede’s battled gamely but Blackrock secured another two goals on the break. An unfortunate injury to Joe Bradley brought a premature end to the game. Fortunately both he and Mr McCotter are now fully restored to rude health.
The First Eleven game marked the opening of a new pitch at Blackrock. The wide open expanse of the ‘Rock Lawn’ making the new Wembley appear postage stamp like. Two evenly matched sides traded chances with both keepers making good saves. Midway through the first half the ball broke kindly on the edge of the box to Callum Lloyd who sweetly clipped the ball into the top corner. One nil St Bede’s, game on! The action continued end to end and from a long free kick Crewdson lunged, Fusi headed and the ball fell kindly for Blackrock to flick it into the unguarded goal. 1-1 half time.
The second half was again an even affair with both sides making changes for tactical and injury reasons to no avail 1-1 full time. So the match would be decided with the taking of penalty kicks. It was not to be as St Bede’s spurned their first three kicks with only Xavi Ashurst finding the net. Blackrock completed a clean sweep as a neatly struck fourth kick nestled in the bottom corner.
This was, as ever, a wonderful occasion with hospitality to the fore and the boys particularly enjoyed their visit to the Aviva Stadium for the Rugby International. The weekend was completed with all the boys celebrating Mass in the Blackrock chapel with host families and friends. This is a fine tradition and we look forward to welcoming Blackrock to Manchester with open arms, next year, but also with a steely determination to regain the trophies.

The team finished as winners of their section with notable victories against Wilmslow High School, Sedburgh, Range High School and Blackpool Sixth Form College. The semi-final against the hosts, Wirral Grammar School, was a one sided affair with the girls winning 10-0. The National finals take place on March 17th in Basildon Essex.

An impressive total of 46 students from the U5th, L6th and U6th took part in this year’s Senior Maths Challenge, organised by the UK Mathematics Trust.
Theo Sharrock, Samuel Walsh, Mike Chen and Isabella Zhang all achieved the prestigious gold award, with Theo, Samuel and Mike qualifying for the British Maths Olympiad! I cannot remember the last time St Bede’s had three qualifiers going through to the next stage.
This is an outstanding achievement for all three as only the top few hundred candidates across the country qualify for the Olympiad stage. Isabella qualified for the ‘Senior Kangaroo’ which is the equivalent of the UEFA Cup (compared to the Champions League)!
Silver certificates went to Youngtaek Yu, Billy Fraine, Spencer Jiang, Hannah Hayes, Killy Zhao, Kofo Spaine, Rob Benson-May, Luke Webb and William Simpson.
Bronze certificates went to Anton Breen, Ben Totterdell, Alex Mannion, Sam Poikkimaki, Rob Gleave, Katherine Gillibrand, Jess McNamee, Michael James, Yolanda Yang, Yali Jiang and Lucy Charleson.
I was very pleased with the number of students who entered the Challenge and I am delighted with the success that they achieved, most notably the four who qualified for the follow on stages. All four are very talented mathematicians with bright futures ahead of them!

Rising Manchester group The Rainband have added a new date to their December tour calendar – to drop in on aspiring musicians at the annual Battle of the Bands at St Bede’s Not only did the band make the College event a more star studded affair this year they have also offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to one of our lucky teenage bands – to open their December 18th headline gig at the newly refurbished HMV Ritz in Manchester.
St Bede’s pupils may well also feel that it is a fairy tale opportunity to be added to the bill of one of The Rainband’s exciting December tour dates which also include gigs with Ocean Colour Scene across the country. The pupils can expect to brush shoulders with Manchester legends from bands such as Elbow, James and the Happy Mondays at the Ritz event, and may well be dreaming of Liam Gallagher one day describing them as he has The Rainband, as “on the cusp of something major…”
The lucky Bedian winners, singer song writers Christian Harrison, Helena Ward and Amy Hatch have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to support The Rainband at the new HMV Ritz on Sunday 18th December. Their bands, The Licks and The Kids are Alright were also given a surprise opportunity to open for The Rainband at Eden Square in Urmston on 17th December. X-factor has nothing on these aspiring musicians!
Proceeds from the Battle of the Bands will go towards the various charities supported by St Bede’s College during Advent. The Rainband have also promised to give a generous donation to the College Lourdes fund. Last year the College raised over £10,000 for charities such as Francis House, Cornerstone and CAFOD, and helping those less fortunate than ourselves is integral to St Bede’s as a Christian community.
