We are delighted to announce this very special event, which is taking place at St Bede’s on Saturday 17 April 2010 for Sixth Form students who have left the College since 1986.  Dinner will be served in the Academic Hall at 7.30pm 

There will be opportunities to tour areas of the College from 6.00pm, to meet old friends and a number of current and former staff 

The provisional timings of the evening are: 

6.00     College opens for tours
7.00     Drinks Reception
7.30     Dinner
9.30     Short speeches followed by opportunity to socialise.
               Late Bar.

Dr Iain Stewart

On Thursday 11th December Professor Iain Stewart from Plymouth University gave an outstanding lecture. Professor Stewart will be familiar to many who have watched his highly acclaimed TV series, in particular “EARTH; Power of the Planet” the title of his illustrated talk. In addition Prof. Stewart has other series covering popular geological topics on Mediterranean Geology, the geology of the Pacific Ring of Fire, volcanoes, earthquakes and recently on the Climate Change debate.

The topic of the lecture covered a number of fascinating areas, including the fact that although many poorer people have to live in areas threatentened by natural disasters, richer people often choose to. One picture showed a school in India which had been devastated by an earthquake; standing next to it, undamaged were two business centres, demonstrating the difference in the quality of design and building materials for the two types of building. There were a number of very concerning messages about climate change and the quantity of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere. The audience went away having been entertained, but with many thought-provoking ideas to consider.

At the end of the lecture Professor Stewart presented a signed copy of his book to Rosie Al-Mulla, who had organised the evening with the help of the College Geology Society and Mr Loader.

Run for Life / Walk for Life / Cycle for Life

For the last three years, the Sixth Form Charities Committee has organised a Sponsored Run / Walk in Heaton Park as one of their fund-raising activities during Lent. Those taking part are sponsored over either a 5km or a 10km circuit which they choose to run, walk or cycle! Last year over 350 people took part and raised a magnificent £12,000 for a Catholic Charity called T.L.C. — which looks after orphaned and abandoned babies in Africa.

Twelve months on, though, and the needs of T.L.C. are as great as ever and so we are asking once again if you will be involved in our ‘Run for Life’ taking place in Heaton Park on Sunday, 2nd March starting at 10.00am.

Lower Fifth, Upper Fifth and Sixth Form pupils are invited to take part in either the 5km or 10km event and collect sponsorship for doing so. We also invite any former Students and Parents – of either current or former pupils – to take part and collect sponsorship. Lower School and Upper Fourth pupils, are also very welcome to take part as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

The Runners will have the chance of winning the trophy for the fastest Man and Woman over the 10km. course. In addition, Runners, Walkers and Cyclists will receive a Certificate to record their involvement and time over their chosen 5km or 10km course.

Pupils who intend to take part should return the form to their Head of Year. Parents and former students wishing to be involved in either the Run or the Walk are asked to return their form to the College Office. (downloadable form above). If any Parents are willing to act as Marshals or First Aiders on the day, then we would be delighted to hear from you. We will send you further details about the Course, Parking, Race Numbers, etc. once we know that you intend to take part.

If you are not able to take part yourself then please sponsor someone who is. Alternatively, what about coming along on the day to cheer on the runners and walkers? Taking part is not just about a really enjoyable morning for everyone but, more importantly, a means of helping children in Africa whose lives are much less privileged than our own.
