St Bede’s U5 student, Dominic Wakeland, was selected to go to Belgium to represent the British Army as part of the 90th anniversary to mark the end of the First World War.
When asked to describe his visit, Dominc said, “It was a very moving experience, just imagining what the soldiers had to go through. Those that lost their lives were not much older than me. Many of them could not be identified and their graves are marked with the inscription ‘Known unto God’.
Amongst former St Bede’s students are sixty nine soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War and a further fifty who lost their lives in the Second World War.
Dominic said, “I am hoping to join the army as a career and the visit has motivated me even more to join the forces. Seeing the sacrifices made by those soldiers for their country makes me want to do the same.”
