Row for Africa

Beginning at Assembly on Thursday 2nd April, Alfred Adegbite began rowing on a Concept 2 rowing machine. Prior to this, on Wednesday morning, he gave an interview to Henry Bonsu, of Colourful radio in London (this can be heard on the Colourful Radio website). Henry is an Old Bedian.

This was to be a 24 hour sponsored row, with the proceeds going to The School Under The Tree in Awassa, Ethiopia. Alfred enlisted the help of a number of other pupils and staff. People opted for 10 minute slots through the rest of Thursday and Friday morning. There were two machines, the main one, and another, which was used for younger pupils to try out. During the night, the pupils (Sixth Form) played “guitar hero”, “computer football” and watched films, as well as rowing.

The atmosphere in the College over the two days was wonderful, with pupils coming in to the Academic Hall to watch, support and try the rowing machine.

At Assembly on Friday, after the Lenten Mass, Alfred finished the row. On the main machine we achieved 288km and on the other one, 26km. So altogether we rowed 314km, a fantastic achievement. We hope to have raised well over £1000. In addition to raising funds, we hope to have raised awareness of the plight of the pupils and teachers in Ethiopia.

Mr Loader was delighted and contacted Belay at The School Under The Tree, who sent a very encouraging message of thanks.

Congratulations to all the pupils and staff who helped and Thank You to everybody who sponsored Alfred and the team. Thankfully, we broke up for Easter on Friday, so all could recover from the sleepless night!
