Walk/Run for Life

Sunday, 08 March 2009 10.00 a.m.

The Walk for Life is one of our major fundraising events of the year. Mums, Dads, Students and Teachers all converge on Heaton Park to take part in this worthwhile trek, raising money from sponsorship to support the College’s chosen Charities. Many students wear fancy dress and make the walk entertaining and fun, others take it extremely seriously and set off at a cracking pace to prove their ability. Everyone is welcome to take part

This year’s Run For Africa takes place on March 8th in Heaton Park.  If you are not able to take part yourself then please sponsor someone who is.  Alternatively, what about coming along on the day to cheer on the runners and walkers?  Taking part is not just about a really enjoyable morning for everyone but, more importantly, a means of helping children in Africa whose lives are much less privileged than our own.

TLC
The Love of Christ Ministries (TLC), was established in 1993, specifically to meet the needs of abandoned children, the most innocent victims of extreme poverty, violent crime, TLC childrenhomelessness, HIV/AIDS and social turmoil in South Africa. The picture on the left shows a few of the children from the Orphanage.  As you can see, although they don’t take part at Heaton Park they are always with us in spirit!!!

The Orphanage looks after many young children: small babies up to 2 years old and older children up to 14 years old.

The orphanage relies totally on voluntary contributions and every month is a precarious financial balancing act for the organisers.  The costs involved in looking after these children are daunting.  Just to give you a few examples, the monthly bills in the Nursery alone are:

Nappies = £650 / Baby Food = £1031 / Medicine = £1022.

Most of us, in comparison to these young children in South Africa enjoy privileged lives.  Although we will never meet them, as Christians we have to accept a responsibility to help those less fortunate than ourselves.  As Christ said, Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do to me.
