West Side Story

The staff and students have just come to the end of a magnificent five performance run of Bernstein’s “West Side Story”. The production was sold out out with over a thousand people packing out the Academic Hall for the performances, which began with the matinee on Wednesday 5 November and concluded with the final show on the evening of Saturday 8 November. Professional tiered seating was hired to cope with the demand for tickets and an extra matinee was staged on Saturday, along with a special preview show for local schools and community groups.

Two professional choreographers and professional musicians supplemented the school band to work alongside the Director, Mrs Nicki Alderson, Musical Director, Mrs Rosamund Meehan, set designer Mr David Mason and Producer, Miss Fiona Cochran to lead a host of talented youngsters across the whole 11-18 age range in their moving re-telling of the familiar story of “star-crossed” love.

Nicki Alderson said, “It was great to see local schools and community groups coming along to share this exciting piece of theatre and this is something we want to build upon at the College.
The cast, crew and musicians are to be congratulated on rising to the challenge of this complex and, at times, difficult piece of theatre, motivated not only by a strong desire to produce their best work but also by an awareness of less pleasant contemporary resonances in the work, such as concerns about knife crime. All the participants felt that they had learned a great deal during the project and are now keen to start work on the next one!”
