Charity Work

Helping those less fortunate than ourselves is integral to St Bede’s as a Christian community.

This year’s charitable fund-raising has been enormously successful we are very grateful to all those who have given so selflessly of their time and those who have given so generously to make up this magnificent total.

The Ethiopia Appeal has been masterminded by Mr Loader (Head of Geology and Head of Middle School in the College) and Mrs Whipp, his daughter, who teaches in the Prep School. The Prep School pupils have been responsible for the majority of this fund-raising.

Similarly, Mr Hennigan and Mr McKeogh were instrumental in organising the Young, Gifted and Green Concert at Gorton Monastery and the Walk for Life in Heaton Park, respectively, both events being triumphs of organisation, enjoyment and both raising a huge amount of money.

St Joseph’s Penny collections were overseen by Miss Curry who does a great job each year not only collecting the money, but counting out about £2,000 in pennies!

Monies were raised for a number of different charities throughout 2008 -09, and funds have been distributed in the following ways;

  • Where disaster strikes spontaneous fund-raising is organised from within the student body, last year for South East Asia Tsunami victims and Pakistan earthquake victims.
  • Every Christmas the younger pupils provide hampers for families in local Primary Schools.
  • During Lent the whole school organise fund raising to support the Diocesan Catholic Children’s Rescue Society.
  • Throughout the year funds are raised in support of Francis House.
  • In 2005 –2006 we particularly focused on raising money for South American Street children and the victims of AIDS in Africa.
  • The Sixth Form collect the wherewithal to provide basic necessities for Cornerstone     – a local charity which caters for people who live on the streets in Manchester.
  • 2006-2007 saw 2 more overseas charities being supported. Through the auspices of Fr Ahern, we were able to provide vital medical equipment for a baby ICU in South America and we have formed a relationship with a young teacher in Ethiopia who is teaching the poverty stricken children in his area. His ‘school’ is being funded almost entirely by the fund-raising which originated at St Bede’s.

None of this important part of our mission would be possible without the support of the whole student body and the parents to whom we owe a huge debt of gratitude. As a result of your generosity, not only are we able to make a difference both close to home and in foreign countries, but we also endeavour to educate our young people to understand that their relatively privileged position brings with it certain responsibilities, and in particular a Christian duty to obey the Gospel imperative to ‘love our neighbour’.
