Admission Procedures

1. All pupils wishing to enter the College at 11+ must sit an entrance examination.  Full information on entry to St Bede’s is contained in the booklet “General Information” which is sent to all parents who are enquiring about entry to St Bede’s.

2. The entrance examination for entry at Year 7 (the Upper 3rd) takes place in January each year.  The examination comprises three papers:-

                                                Arithmetic
                                                English
                                                Verbal Reasoning

In all the papers the ability and knowledge required is that normally expected of a pupil of good primary school standard, such as one who would be selected for grammar school by a local education authority in its selection testing at 11+ age.

3. All candidates who have taken the entrance examination are interviewed between the end of January and beginning of February.  Parents are invited to attend the interview.

The interview comprises questions on mental arithmetic and the candidate is asked to read a passage and answer questions on it.  Questions are also asked about a candidate’s academic and extra-curricular interests.

4. St Bede’s College is a fee paying school.  Details of the current fees and information regarding assistance with fees are contained in the special booklet which is sent herewith.  All applicants for financial assistance are required to complete a Governors Finance Form.

5. When offering places the Headmaster takes account of candidates performance in the entrance examination, performance at interview and (where provided) their previous headteacher’s reference together with the ability to pay fees or fees with the help of a bursary.  The Headmaster’s decision regarding the offering of places is final.

6. The College publishes its results on the date agreed by the Greater Manchester Consortium of Independent Schools and state grammar schools.  This date usually occurs in the first half of March.  In accordance with the procedure agreed by the schools within the Consortium, parents are given twelve days in which to accept or refuse the offer of a place.
