What will the subject be like?
Combined science enables our pupils to encounter all the three sciences of Biology, Chemistry and Physics in a way that is immediately accessible. There is a focus on laboratory and practical skills and almost immediately students can expect to be learning how to operate in laboratories specifically equipped for the demands of pupils of this age.
The course flows through two years and follows the best practice of National Curriculum and other leading independent schools.
What will be studied?
In the Upper Third, the course begins with basic scientific experimentation and data logging. Biological aspects of the course include looking at the various types of life and the process of growing up. The latter topic is dealt with in a factual way, but within the teachings of the Catholic church and supported by parallel moral teaching from the pupil’s form teacher. Chemistry elements include looking at acids and alkalis and use of materials. By looking at electrostatics, magnetism and electricity, Physics is introduced.
Many of these areas are further developed in the Lower Fourth, such as earth in space for Physics, sight, sound, and reproduction in flowering plants for Biology and elements and Chemical reactions for Chemistry. Environmental issues and population are also addressed, broadening the subject into key areas of social concern in today’s world.
Lessons per week
4 in the Upper Third and 5 in the Lower Fourth. There will always be at least one double period to permit ample time for laboratory work. All are taught by science specialists who teach their own science(s) to A level standard.
