Introduction
‘Man is a political animal’- Aristotle
Political science is essentially the study of power- who has it, how it is used and how it is controlled.
So why study British Government and Politics?
This is a well established A level respected by all British universities. It will equip you with both knowledge and understanding that will help you in the future, both in academic and vocational life.
As with all other A level subjects, Politics will be offered as both an AS and A2 course.
AS
There are three units in the AS course which will introduce the British political system and its governing institutions. Areas covered will include electoral systems and voting behaviour, political parties and pressure groups and the study of the institutions which govern Britain- Parliament, the Prime Minister and Cabinet and the European Union.
‘Politics is the art of the possible’- Bismarck
A2
In the A2 course three units will also be undertaken. These will include a comparative study of American and British political systems and study of the devolved government of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The final unit, in common with all other A level specifications, will be a synoptic unit which will cover aspects of the whole AS and A2 course.
Each module will be examined at the end of the year in which it is undertaken.
Which skills are taught?
Studying British Government will enable you to develop study techniques such as essay writing, note-making and research skills which will benefit you in higher education. Skills of evaluation, analysis and extrapolation will be of value in your chosen career.
