PE / Games

Key Stage 3

What will the subject be like?

There are a very wide range of options from which pupils are offered as great a variety as possible, so that they may both improve their general health and physical fitness and gain very considerable enjoyment regardless of personal skill levels. The aim of the department is to encourage pupils to work through and up the skill levels to constantly aim for their personal best. The balance of activities between invasion, net, striking and aesthetic games together with athletics and fitness activities is in line with governmental recommendations.

What will be studied?

In PE:

  • Badminton
  • Volleyball
  • Gymnastics
  • Basketball (boys)
  • Dance (girls)
  • Cricket (boys)
  • Health related fitness

In Games:

  • Netball (girls)
  • Rugby (boys)
  • Hockey (girls)
  • Football boys)
  • Athletics
  • Tennis
  • Rounders (girls)
  • Cross Country (boys)

Lessons per week:

All pupils have one double games lesson and one single PE lesson per week. Girls and boys are taught separately with at least one specialist PE teacher allocated to each of the two groups. By dividing the teaching time into blocks, pupils will experience almost all the activities listed above.

Groups are taught by ability after a psychomotor test. There is ample opportunity to move between groups during either year.

“St. Bede’s enjoys a national sporting reputation, particularly with respect to football and netball. All pupils are strongly encouraged to work for a place in one of the many teams we field. Our teams have visited many parts of the UK to compete, as well as touring abroad to expand their cultural as well as their sporting horizons. Our new all weather playing surface is a superb facility. Floodlit too, it allows play all year ’round and keeps us in the forefront of sporting schools in the North West.”

  • Mrs Nicki McCormick, Head of Girls’ PE and Games
  • Mr Kevin Rafferty, Head of Boys’ PE and Games
  • Mr Steve Fallon, Head of Football
