Key Stage 3
What will the subject be like?
The primary aim of the course is to enable all pupils to experience the essential value of Art, Craft and Design work and to produce, appreciate and respond to works of Art, which enrich and enhance their lives.
Pupils are taught in large, bright, well-equipped studios at the top of the Regis building. Class sizes are small and therefore pupils benefit from the space and personal attention afforded by the staff.
The course is designed to flow through the two years, in line with the National Curriculum and Departmental schemes of work.

What will be studied?
In the Upper Third, the course begins with a focus on Graphic Design and popular imagery. Pupils study advertising, illustration, colour theory, the Comic Strip and Pop Art. They use a variety of media and processes to develop skills and experience.
During this time confidence is being nurtured and towards the second year pupils are steered towards observational drawing and painting. This work usually relates to Natural Forms. Throughout the Lower Fourth, pupils develop their studies through varied printmaking techniques and the use of mixed media. We look at the history of Printmaking and engage with the work of artists such as Rembrandt and Durer. The course is flexible and continues into themes, which are relevant at that time.
Homework
Homework is a vital component at all levels in this subject and from the beginning pupils learn to develop a sketch book approach and see homework as an important and relevant part of the course.
“Art and Design gives fulfilment and pleasure whilst encouraging pupils to be innovative and enterprising. It provides for all pupils to learn and achieve.”
